Keys to Literacy Offers Online Course via MindEdge

October 20, 2008

Keys to Literacy, a leader in providing consulting and professional development in adolescent literacy, has launched its first online course, developed in collaboration with MindEdge.

The Key Three Routine - Comprehension Strategy Instruction online course is designed for K-12 teachers who are interested in learning how to build student comprehension with direct, systematic instruction. The six-module course offers flexible, self-paced instruction and easy, any-time access via an Internet connection.

Interactive activities and assignments in the Key Three Routine course allow learners to use their own classroom materials to generate sample lessons that incorporate pertinent concepts. The course takes approximately ten hours, total time, to complete, and learners have up to eight weeks to complete it. Four schools in Massachusetts (Milford, Sanborn, Uxbridge, and Exeter) have adopted the program to date. It is also available to individual users through the Keys to Literacy website, www.keystoliteracy.com.

"The Key Three Routine online course teaches reading comprehension skills through instruction that is embedded in content," said Joan Sedita, founding partner of Keys to Literacy. "It is a way for teachers who can't participate in onsite school or district-sponsored training to nonetheless receive this vital training."

"Through the Key Three Routine, teachers are exposed to successful, research-based instructional practices, and methods for applying that knowledge to their teaching, unlocking literacy for their students."

MindEdge's development team assisted Keys to Literacy in creating an online course based on the company's face-to-face seminars and on MindEdge's expertise in reaching adult learners with effective web-based instruction.
