September 14, 2015
The National Institute of Online Learning (NIOL) now offers a Certificate in Online Learning after adding two new courses to its catalog: Narrative Learning and Online Learning Accessibility.
NIOL, founded by MindEdge Learning in 2012, seeks to improve the quality and effectiveness of online learning, especially for adult learners, by promoting best practices and innovation in the field.
The certificate includes five NIOL courses:
- Introduction to Online Learning
- The Technology of Online Learning
- Teaching Online
- Narrative Learning
- Online Learning Accessibility
Introduction to Online Learning introduces the major models, tools, and techniques in creating and delivering online learning. It reviews the fundamentals of general learning theory and how it can be applied, in practice, to online design and instruction.
The Technology of Online Learning provides a brief survey of the technology employed in online learning. It reviews the key software and hardware options available, as well as covers best practices in using technology including integration methods.
Teaching Online offers a review of the major models, tools, and techniques employed in teaching online, including how to use technology to identify and assist struggling students.
Narrative Learning introduces the major techniques and strategies for integrating narrative learning into an educational curriculum. It presents different types of narrative learning and identifies the best means to utilize each. Finally, it explores the efficacy of narrative learning and how it can be applied to online design and instruction.
Building on MindEdge’s extensive experience with Section 508 compliance, Online Learning Accessibility covers the basics of developing accessible online learning including learner expectations and federal compliance standards that all institutions of higher education and training organizations should be aware of.
The NIOL courses are available on MindEdge Online and through the NIOL website.
Successful completion of any NIOL course earns learners a National Institute of Online Learning badge. This symbol of achievement, aligned with Mozilla Open Badges, can be stored in a learner’s Mozilla Backpack for sharing across career sites, social networks, and personal portfolios. More information on Open Badges can be found at http://openbadges.org.
